Shinji Ikari (碇シン Shinji Ikari)
Is the main character in the series. Is the third child and pilot Evangelion Unit 01. He is the son of Gendo and Yui Ikari.
Shinji was abandoned by his father Gendo Ikari when I was very small, due to the death of his mother. A phone call from his father would come to the city of Tokyo-3 after 10 years without seeing. There he meets Misato Katsuragi, and moments after the disappointment comes when he learns that his father has called him to fly an EVA. Misato encouraged him to pilot the EVA-01, and after the battle against Sachiel Angel took charge and took him to live in his apartment with Pen Pen.
The soul of his mother, who is in his unit Evangelion 01 (by accident testing the EVA), gives him strength to fight. At the beginning of the series, the real reason you choose to pilot the EVA-01 is only because you are told to do so. Shinji has so little faith in himself that he ends up doing everything you asked, for example, in high school learned to play the Cello, and it was pretty good, just because a teacher told him to.
Despite his shyness, he managed to create inextricable links with their classmates Suzuhara Toji and Kensuke Aida. In his appearance Shinji has black hair and dark gray eyes; as Rei Ayanami, is very like his father.
The loss of his mother and his father's abandonment make Shinji show little or no self-esteem, personal imprisonment and a tendency to run away from difficult or painful situations (this is often represented by Shinji listening to your headphones). It is also described as socially awkward, introverted and shy. She has a radically different to that of Asuka, but the two have in common that they try to escape from those around them.
While it is recognized later in the series is a great driver of EVA, it seems to show more skills before that, plus a talent for cooking. It was revealed in chapter 15, who played the cello, something that is never mentioned in the series. In this regard, the cello is a recurring motif in the series, it is possibly the only sign of identity of Shinji. In fact, his musical talent seems to be the only way the young Ikari to express openly. Claims to have no talent for it, but when shown touching a piece of Bach interpretation considered very demanding.
