The Ninth Angel, Matariel, looks similar to harvestmen, with four very long legs that give it a spider. Your body has a hemispherical, black, and has multiple eyes, some of them triangular. The central eye, looking down, can secrete a corrosive liquid able to break through steel and concrete. The Angel tried to create a tunnel directly to the Geo-Front using this acid. Seems not to have more weapons than this.
It is the only Angel to die by gunfire normal ballistic because its AT field, which is not shown, was so weak as to fall within a few shots. Also its core is not revealed, as he died by a random burst upon him, but presumably that would be in its central eye.
Matariel emerged from the ocean during a blackout in Tokyo-3 (caused by someone or some organization without specifying in which, Gendo said Angel had been the cause). He was defeated by the joint action of the units 00, 01 and 02, the first combined use of the three EVAs. The Angel was killed by firing Shinji on it with his rifle EVA Rei Asuka went from below while guarding him acid.
Matariel means Premonition of God. It gets its name from the Angel of Rain (雨の天使 Ame no Tenshi )
