Although the unit 04 does not appear in the series, has a definite purpose. The unit 04 was built in the Second Branch of NERV located in the Nevada desert, USA, working mainly as a test subject for Shamshel S ² engine.
The unit 04 was destroyed along with the headquarters and all facilities in a huge accident that covers a radius of 89 kilometers. This destruction was detected and recorded by the geosynchronous satellite NERV. The cause of the accident remains a mystery.NERV determined that the accident occurred when the S ² engine was installed in the unit, and there were many factors that may have led to this accident. One theory suggested by Ritsuko Akagi is that the S ² engine could have opened a Sea of Dirac similar to that created by the Angel Leliel, as they clarify that devastated the NERV Second Branch was not an explosion but simply disappeared.
The design of the unit 04 is virtually identical to the unit 03. According to Gainax material, this unit was silver, with red and black.
Although the unit 04 does not appear in the series, it makes appearances at games and spin-off. Never displayed to the pilot of the unit 04, may not have one during activation or to use the Dummy Plug. In most spin-offs, Kensuke Aida is the pilot of this unit.
A promotional video of the unit 04 is shown to be piloted by Kaworu and battling against a version of Rebuild of Ramiel were analyzed using the Spear of Longinus.This, however, was a non-canonical short that was released by Gainax through pachinko, and really has no correlation with the series.
