The series does not leave very clear the role of Lilith in the Human Complementation Project although it is likely that his crucifixion having origins in human cultural traditions, which is dignified with Christ through his death on the cross, and is likely to Lilith's position is a symbol of the veneration of human beings recreated in the series.
In The End of Evangelion, Gendo Ikari tried to start their own version of Human Complementation Project introducing his right hand (with Adam inplantado in embryonic form in it) Rei's chest. She, however, stood with his hand and Adam, rejecting Ikari control, and deciding to merge with Adam on his own.Lilith, having regained his soul, freed from his bonds and was transformed into a planet-wide version of Rei (although it took the form of Kaworu Nagisa to Shinji Ikari, implying that Tabris / Kaworu was part of the merger, however there to consider other versions that attempt to explain this successively, which speculates that the form taken by lilith is symbolic and is caused to interact with Shinji, or perhaps materialize the wishes of the latter). Then anticampo-AT created a collapsed all fields of human AT, turning the planet into a sea of LCL. Rei / Lilith died when Shinji rejected the Human Complementation Project.
