Unit 00 is the prototype, the first successful attempt to create a unit EVA, and is piloted by Rei Ayanami. The head design is similar to previous failures, but with one eye. There are two domes in the center of the unit:one green and one transparent, which contains the eye, the role of the other (if any) is never revealed. Interestingly, the unit 00 is the only unit Evangelion has not come to open his mouth or showing the appearance of its organic body, which remains unknown.
The initial color of the unit 00 was orange-yellow, like the previous prototypes, and smooth, rounded shoulders, but his armor was severely damaged by the beam of particles of the Angel Ramiel. Subsequent repairs and improvements included a blue and white armor (and with the characteristic shoulder high) in addition to other changes towards greater effectiveness in combat. Improvements to resemble Unit 00 the other EVAs, but there are severe differences or limitations. Were added elongated shoulders, although similar to unit 01 and unit 02, are used to store retro-rockets, as shown in the fight with the Angel Matarael. As a prototype, Unit 00 can not be equipped with Type-D team.
Rebuild of Evangelion, the first unit 00 shows white and gray colors with yellow, but the armor does not change, except in the shoulders, and the configuration is higher than in the series was added later along with color change. When the unit reaches 03, SEELE recommended to freeze the drive, but prefers to do so Gendo Unit 02 in place.
- The true nature of the soul in Unit 00 is never specified, but presumably is related to Rei somehow. Some fans of the series believe that the soul of Naoko Akagi, Akagi Ritsuko's mother can be the life of the unit 00. Unit 00 was self-destroyed by Rei to destroy the Angel Armisael
