Asuka Langley Soryu (惣流アスカラン Soryu Asuka Rangure)
It is the second choice to pilot Unit 02.
In the films of Rebuild of Evangelion Asuka Langley is known as Shikinami.
Born in Germany, Japanese and American descent. Her mother, Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu, was pilot tested in the German branch of the Project Gehirn E. When Asuka was four, his mother participated in an experiment in contact with the unit 02 (similar to the experiment by Yui Ikari with unit 01).Although physically survived the ordeal, Kyoko was mentally impaired, to believe that a doll Asuka was his daughter, while only referring to his real daughter as "that girl" and even going so far as to slay the wrist before hanging herself, saying "die with me." Asuka then found the body when he went to say he had been selected to pilot EVA.
The scene at Asuka's mother refuses to know and recognize as his daughter a doll from Hayao Miyazaki's manga Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Anno worked on the film version, and expressed interest in creating a story centered on one of the secondary characters, Kushana, but rejected the idea Miyazaki.
His American father quickly remarried, though the Asuka defense quickly repelled his new stepmother and the two learn to tolerate each other, maintaining a happy facade of a normal family. Asuka proves to be a child prodigy, gaining a degree in a field without specifying when he was a teenager, and becoming fluent in Japanese (though with difficulty to read and write kanji). Highlights of his appearance his flaming red hair, which contains clips with A10 (which uses up when not driving), and blue eyes, possibly of German genetic heritage. Her best friend is his partner and representative of class, Hikari Horaki.
First introduced in episode 8, with the arrival of the unit 02 and the battle with Gaghiel, Asuka shows have a high synchronization and exceptional skills as a pilot of EVA, being very aggressive and confident in battle.
After being defeated in battle by Zeruel, self-confidence of Asuka (and, consequently, its timing and effectiveness as a pilot) begins to decrease. This culminates in episode 22, when Arael Asuka appears and, overwhelmed by the increasingly poor performance on tests of timing, was furious at being ordered to serve as backup to Rei. She defies orders and tries to attack the Angel alone, but is overwhelmed by a psychological attack that forced Angel to relive painful memories and that results in mental crisis. Lose the will to live and becomes unable to drive the unit 02, spending much of the last episodes of the series in a hospital bed in a catatonic state.
In The End of Evangelion, where the JSDF invade NERV headquarters, Asuka is placed inside the unit 02, submerged in a lake within the Geo-Front, for your protection. When bombarded by depth charges, Asuka declares that it wants to die and in a moment of clarity, realizes that her soul is within the EVA, and has been throughout its protection. Regained its own identity, go out and defeat the forces of JSSDF before being confronted by the MP EVAs. Although successfully defeat the nine opponents, Unit 02 loses power and the unlimited duration of the PM (which allow them to continue to operate despite being severely injured or crippled) finally allowed to disembowel and dismember Unit 02 using aftershocks of the spear of Longinus. After Shinji rejects Instrumentality, Asuka Shinji appears next in the final scene of the film.
Rebuild of Evangelion Asuka appears in Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, with a change in its name: it goes from Soryu (惣 流) to Shikinami (式 波). In this tetralogy, and as was said after the premiere of the film, the character of Asuka experience any significant changes in personality. For example:
Evangelion 2.0 no longer has an aversion to dolls. In fact it is a glove puppet that talks from time to time, using it to wish each other luck. According to Shinji says, is a reminder of his mother.
His former crush on Kaji is non-existent: she comes alone to Japan, although they seem to know.
It is much more open to Shinji about his feelings toward him. For example, are ubiquitous Rei jealousy: when cooking for him Rei, Asuka tries to do the same to get his attention. More significantly, after the battle against Sahaquiel, she lies in bed with him Shinji, similar to the original series in the chapter of Israfel, but this time they both lie in bed and counted each other's past and fears, flourishing a connection between them.
His hatred Rei is replaced by a romantic antagonism based on the above jealousy, this is becoming respect, and even finally agrees to be friends with her.
This movie is not Asuka and Toji the pilot of Unit 03.When, following the Vatican Treaty, Gendo orders freeze the EVA-02 to replace the 03, Asuka expressed unease about this, but a pledge to drive 03. When it is owned by Angel Bardiel, Asuka is unconscious and the Angel is confronted by Shinji, in a combat system similar to the series, finishing the Entry Plug also destroyed. Believing her dead, Shinji is enraged and tries to destroy the Geofront, but is stopped. Without their knowledge, Asuka is to be alive, but receiving medical attention due to heavy infection of the Angel. In advance of the next film, Asuka is displayed again in service, although showing an eye patch, it is unknown if he has lost or is only temporary.
